Child Afraid of Dark can Be Cured of their Phobia
“A very easy fear to get rid of”
There are many children who are afraid of the dark and places where there is little or no light. With a youthful imagination running wild, it’s easy to understand why they might be frightened.
How to Cure Child Fear of Dark
The best way I found out is to play games with them and of course the best game you can play would be hide and seek. When I moved into the country onto 5 acres my kids were terribly frightened to go outside because of how dark it can be in the country.
With no street lights illuminating the area, on a moonless night even the traces of what use to look like trees kind of blend into one giant dark shadow. SO you can see where this is an extreme situation for any child to face their fears of the dark by going into those woods.
My fiance’s child scared of dark would not even go into the woods at all. This child afraid of the dark sat in the house and wouldn’t join in on the fun. This changed as we started playing a little game. Can you guess what game that is?
Hide and Seek to ease Fear
We started playing hide and go seek and we would often split up into two teams or more leaving each team with anywhere from 2-4 children to a team.
As time went on all the children had learned to adapt to the darkness and their imaginary fears were eliminated. This caused a chain reaction because they started turning off their night lights by themselves.
When they learn to be safe outside then it becomes easy for them to feel safe inside and protected. “Child Fear of the Dark”, had vanished and left behind my little brave children. When their friends come over to play it is almost funny to see even some of the teenagers afraid to go into the woods alone. It can be quite eerie and often I can feel the tingling of fear on the back of my neck. (I don’t tell my children about that).
Managing your child's fear Correctly
Now I know I’m not the perfect parent because I had often used terms like chicken, and often taunted them about it. But I have learned and no longer do that. Positive reinforcement works much better then anything and if you can make conquering fear a game that is fun then you are on the right track.
