Why do children Develop a Phobia and fear of falling?

Fear of Falling Felt by Your Child

Children often have Dreams about falling

Now this doesn't mean your child has a Child falling phobia. It's hard to say exactly when this phobia develops or even why a child would be dreaming about falling anyway. I can remember the first time I was falling in my dream and it was off a big grassy hill. For some reason I was looking over the edge and down the cliff and the next thing I know I felt weightless and disoriented as I fell quickly to the ground. I noticed the green grass pasture below getting closer and then I woke up all of the sudden and I was afraid.

Child fear develops early on but most will outgrow these fears. With the right communication and understanding given there is little chance of any phobias developing. I was able to outgrow that fear of heights with time but as I grew older because of the lack of being in high places it re-surfaced into a phobia. So even as adults we are very susceptible to developing phobias and fears to things we become unfamiliar with.

At this point in my life I was only about 5 years old and really had not had a big fall that I could remember nor did I fear heights. I was a little curtain climber and was climbing trees without any fear whatsoever. So why all of the sudden did I develop this child fear of falling?

I almost think the mind instinctively sends us signals to try and help set limits and instill a little fear in us to try and protect us. Its almost like having a guardian angel but for some it can become a phobia of heights and a fear that prevents us from doing things as simple as climbing up a ladder to hang some Christmas lights.

Child Fear : "Is being Afraid of Heights Normal"?

Having a fear of heights is normal but it really depends on the degree of fear we have. An example to use other then heights is when your cutting food such as carrots with a sharp knife you may think about what could happen if you slip. You may even picture or imagine yourself slipping and cutting yourself, but still you continue cutting the carrots. The fact is your chopping them up with safety in mind. Because you are aware of the danger you safely avoid getting hurt by being safe and taking precautions. So as you see fear in small quantities can help you stay safe from harm or injury.

What is an abnormal fear of heights in a child?

If you take your child to a park especially one that they have been to several times before and they wont get on the slide. Somewhere along the way they developed a child fear or phobia of heights or falling and are now afraid to climb the ladder and have fun. This fear or stress that is created is preventing them from having fun like they use to. Of course you do have to take into account the age of the child.

Many young children can go through phases as they test their limits and most of the time they grow out of their fears. The reason for this is that kids tend to do many things so they experience so much and are often looking fear in the eyes. Children are often more often capable of healing mentally and physically faster then adults so I wouldn't worry unless the fear, phobia or anxiety seems to get worse with time.

The park is a good place for them to face their fear so try taking your children to the park as much as possible. It will allow you to keep a better eye on them and see any disorders or conditions they might have.
